Holy hell.

That’s the first thought that came to mind when hearing SPELLES (stylised in all capitals) and their song “Holy Hells”.
To say that I was unprepared for the vocal prowess of Kathryn Baar would be an understatement. The raw potency within her voice caught me off guard. It’s a force capable of toppling mountains and birthing new realms. Adding to the power of Kathryn’s voice is her partner in crime, Luc Laurent.
The dynamic pair, both masters of pen and melody, have birthed more than a song with “Holy Hells”; they’ve crafted a spiritual and auditory masterpiece. It effortlessly merges the fervour of a soulful gospel with the might of a powerhouse pop song.
Employing the term ‘pop’ in describing “Holy Hells” is somewhat lackadaisical as there is nothing saccharine or frivolous about it. However, if by ‘pop’ I denote elements like good rhythm, catchy melody, infectious lyrics, and an even more catchy chorus, then “Holy Hells” undoubtedly fosters a collective sing-along.
Yet, the brilliance of ‘“Holy Hells” extends beyond its vocal delivery and musical arrangement. The lyrics themselves reverberate with an exceptional might and is a testament to resilience, fortitude, and an unguarded admission of emerging triumphant from the abyss.
