Sunset Rubdown’s long-awaited album, Always Happy To Explode, is finally here and marks a moment in music history as their first release in fifteen years. The record showcases the band’s evolution and their remarkable ability to blend playful melodies with thought-provoking themes.
The band’s reunion was sparked by a dream. Spencer Krug, the driving force behind Sunset Rubdown, woke up one day with a desire to revive the project, leading to a series of successful shows in 2022. The renewed energy is audible throughout Always Happy To Explode. Recorded primarily live, the album feels fresh and spontaneous and captures the essence of a band rediscovering its roots after years apart.
Among the nine tracks, “Candles” shines as a highlight of the album. Originally crafted in 2020 and later transformed into a full-band arrangement, the song juxtaposes upbeat instrumentals with reflective lyrics about ageing and the challenges of the modern music landscape. The infectious tune is layered with thoughtful undertones and is a delightful reminder that happiness and melancholy can coexist.
With guitarist Michael Doerksen absent, the band made the bold choice to record an album largely devoid of electric guitar. The decision opens up a fresh sonic landscape and emphasises keyboards, bass, and Spencer’s versatility. Camilla Wynne‘s contributions on keyboard and vocals add a lush texture that enhances the album and the band’s already distinctive sound.
The album is also a celebration of collaboration. For the first time, each member contributes vocally On the penultimate track “Worm”, it provides a rich and layered aural experience. The newfound vocal synergy demonstrates how the band has grown together, even while spread across two countries.
The story behind the album’s creation is as compelling as the music itself. From logistical challenges to unexpected setbacks, the band navigated it all with resilience. The camaraderie forged during this tumultuous process shines through in the recordings and infuses them with joy and relief that invites listeners into their world.
