Jake Amy’s latest single, “Graze,” is a striking testament to the artist’s evolving role in the nu-jazz landscape. Available through Amsterdam’s Wicked Wax label on Friday, November 29th, the track immerses one in a moody, high-energy soundscape that balances technical prowess with creative innovation.
Anchored by Jordan Pereira’s electrifying drum patterns and Jake’s lush Fender Rhodes tones, “Graze” brims with a relentless drive. Stephen Lane’s bass work seamlessly integrates rhythm and melody, creating a dynamic interplay that enhances the track’s complexity. The live recording environment, a studio tied to Jake’s high school roots, adds an intimate dimension to this sophisticated production.
Reflecting on their approach, Jake explains,
“Developing my sound in the field of nu-jazz as an Australian musician requires research and deep listening from other nu-jazz artists who all pretty exclusively live internationally. Jazz is evidently an African-American art form. I’m excited to see nu-jazz grow in places like Naarm/Melbourne, with more artists experimenting in this space.”
This perspective underscores “Graze” as both a homage to nu-jazz pioneers and a bold contribution to its future. With “Graze,” Jake Amy doesn’t just explore nu-jazz, they push its boundaries, crafting a piece that’s both reflective and forward-thinking.
