LISTEN: “What Flavour?” by Keys

Channelling the jittery funk of early ’80s New York, the Welsh outfit Keys take a sharp left turn with “What Flavour?”. Starting with a playful bounce, the song begins to unravel into something far more restless with its rhythms and warped funk building toward an uneasy climax by transforming  a playful question into an exploration of desire, indecision, and the agony of wanting what you can’t have.

Frontman Matthew Evans reveals,

‘What Flavour?’ began with something my daughter said while staring at the endless choices at an ice cream stand on holiday in Tenby. We instinctively sang it back to her, and before long, it snowballed into a full-blown song. As it unfolds, the track grows more agitated, from playful indecision into the agony of craving what someone else has. We’d been deep into disco and 99 Records bands at the time, so everything came out upside down. It doesn’t sound like anything we’ve done before, and that’s exactly why we love it.

As the groove locks in, the tension rises, and before long, Keys turn nostalgia into something fresh and electric. With “What Flavour?” Keys prove they’re still evolving, still willing to shake things up, and the result is their most infectious track yet.
