NEW NOISE: “Halo” by Forgotten Shrine

Music
Shelia Taylor
May 13, 2026

A duo typically rooted in the shadows of folk metal, Forgotten Shrine veer away from heaviness to explore a softer and more vulnerable side of themselves. The meme “in my lane, unbothered and moisturised” comes to mind with their latest single, “Halo”.

By channeling the melodic DNA of Appalachian folk music, Sofia Frasz and Josh Alexander have crafted a song that feels less like a traditional metal ballad and more like a reclamation of regional identity. In its beautiful simplicity, “Halo” reveals the push and pull of wanting to see someone as good, even when red flags are waving.

While Sofia is known for her harsh vocals, her clean vocals sits closer to the emotional intensity that is often associated with Amy Lee. There is something delicately controlled in her delivery. It’s a performance that never tips into excess or strain. Nothing about “Halo” leans into metal convention. It feels effervescent yet moody, with Sofia’s voice holding both in suspension. That balance is reinforced by Josh’s bright and plucked guitar foundation that never tries to steal the emotional spotlight..

“Halo” unfolds like a narrative of denial that is shaped with the structure of a traditional folk sorrow but delivered in a modern way. That compelling friction is from the interplay of Sofia’s vocal carrying a sense of desperate optimism, the bubbly string-led arrangement, and the song’s more sombre undercurrent.

Forgotten Shrine show that their most striking shift is not toward heavier riffs, but toward restraint. It is a deliberate step away from their usual atmosphere, and it lands as both a subtle disruption and a recalibration. By stripping back distortion, they reveal a melodic core that feels steady, unexpected, yet fully in their control.
