Not every heavy song needs to sound intimidating. Sometimes the smartest way to land a punch is to smile first. By wrapping a mischievous streak inside bright melodies and a chorus that almost feels borrowed from a nursery rhyme before revealing the bite hiding underneath, Nova Riot’s “Midnight Coven Crush” understands that instinct.
From their forthcoming debut album Blood, Lies & Lullabies (August 21), the band’s self-described “bubblegum alternative metal” makes more sense once the song begins to unfold. Rather than chasing crushing heaviness, “Midnight Coven Crush” leans into infectious pop-rock hooks that allow bursts of distorted guitar to interrupt the sweetness without overwhelming it. It’s less about proving how heavy it can be and more interested in keeping one guessing about where it might go next.
The chorus is playful, and its almost childlike quality sits at odds with the attitude running through the verses. It creates a tension that gives the hook its staying power. Instead of weakening the song, the contrast makes its mischievous edge feel sharper. It doesn’t disguise the song’s defiance. It simply gives it more bite, albeit through a candy-coated smirk.
Catchy and confrontational, “Midnight Coven Crush” lets the hooks draw one in before revealing the grin hiding behind them, proving that sometimes the sweetest melodies carry the sharpest teeth.
