ALBUM REVIEW: Another Year In The Minors by Pigeon Club

Music Review

August 5, 2024

Pigeon Club‘s latest release, Another Year In The Minors (August 9), explores transitions and soul-searching through the lens of folk and rock. The album, crafted with Grammy-winning co-producers John Would and Amy Wood, marks a significant evolution for Wayne Whittaker, the creative force behind Pigeon Club.

From the outset, Pigeon Club’s mastery of blending emotional transparency with a touch of self-effacing humour shines through. Another Year In The Minors navigates the tumultuous terrain of personal growth and captures the essence of a transitional phase with striking authenticity.

The single “Liar,” exemplifies this with its lush indie rock arrangement. The song dives into the vulnerability that arises when one’s defence mechanisms falter. Pigeon Club‘s lyrical exploration of anxiety and self-doubt is both tender and poignant and is supported by a soothing musical backdrop that provides comfort and reassurance.

Equally riveting is “Ancient History,” a cinematic indie-folk epic that embraces the bittersweet reflections of loss and the relentless march of time. Pigeon Club’s tribute to personal milestones and the memories of loved ones is both heartwarming and moving. The track’s sonic landscape, reminiscent of Neil Young‘s introspective quality and The Beatles‘ melodic inventiveness, complements its lyrical content beautifully.

Pigeon Club‘s Another Year In The Minors is a reflective journey through the human condition. Pigeon Club’s ability to intertwine deeply personal narratives with universal themes ensures that the album speaks to one on multiple levels.
