ALBUM REVIEW: Cherries in the Head by Tencu/eleOnora

If immersive auditory experience is your thing, then you must experience Cherries in the Head, the sophomore album from experimental duo Tencu/eleOnora. Delivering a captivating blend of abstract soundscapes, the five track album delivers a unique musical journey through improvised material the duo recorded during the summer of 2023.

The album presents an intriguing split: eleOnora leads side A while Tencu takes charge of side B, both offering different takes on the same recording session. Their unique approach becomes clear as they navigate shared sections of the material, revealing distinct viewpoints on the collaboration. These varied soundscapes are similar to cherries, some sweet, some sour, each representing a different flavour in one’s musical journey.

Listening to Cherries in the Head, I felt as if it was a trippy sci-fi excursion through distant and perhaps unsafe planets. There are moments within the music where one can sense an amalgamation of organic and mechanical elements, resembling the mournful cry of a fading entity, grappling with its imminent demise.

What Cherries in the Head makes me realise is that there are boundless possibilities of musical collaboration and interpretation. It makes one question: what is music? Is it a mere sound or notes? Whatever the answer may be for each person, Cherries in the Head is an album that challenges perceptions and invites listeners into an exploratory realm of musical expression and is a journey that goes beyond the conventional, provoking introspection and inviting us to redefine our understanding of musical artistry and its myriad forms.
