ALBUM REVIEW: Darkness by The OddEven

Be it a sign from somewhere beyond earth or a signal deep within the Earth’s magnetic field, The OddEven are single handedly bringing back heavy and groove riff-oriented hard rock with Darkness on January 5th via Eclipse Records.

With a penchant in finding inspiration from beyond, bassist Weed, guitarist E.T., vocalist Chris Volz, and drummer Tosha Jones, are not only channelling the power of the Universe, but also of the revered sounds of 90s grunge acts like that of Alice in Chains and Gruntruck.

by Will Cline

With their debut record, Space Juice (2020), the band found Billboard chart success with their singles, “Again” and “Bleed for Something”. They released Dance of the Dead (2021) and landed in the charts again as they toured across the US with Slaughter, L.A. Guns, Adema, and Flaw.

Within the ten tracks on Darkness, The OddEven sublimely continues elevating and refining their sound. The resonating booming bass and drums by Weed and Tosha add depth and power to the band’s sonic structure, while E.T. oscillates between melodies that are both worldly and otherworldly. Grounding the elemental depths of the music is the gritty and raspy vocals of Chris, who dances between angst and soulful as if spinning on a dime.

It’s simple. If one likes heavy guitars, heavier drums, and even heavier bass, then Darkness by The OddEven is going to satiate your appetite.

But Darkness is so much more than that and so is The OddEven. It’s a journey.  A journey into realms where you’ll confront shadowy underworlds, aliens, and more.

Darkness is a euphoric frenzy of stardust and melodies that harmoniously showcase The OddEven’s innate ability and magic to make colossal mesmerising and electrifying grooves time and time again.
