ALBUM REVIEW: Elders by Aptøsrs

I said this before when I wrote about “Rust Mountain,” the debut single from Aptøsrs, but they had me at the dinosaur.

And yes, everything else is still an added bonus.

Out now, from composer and songwriter Paul Terry, aka Aptøsrs (pronounced like the dinosaur, “Apatosaurus”) is their debut album Elders.

The eight-track album unfolds as a sonic journey that masterfully weaves cinematic orchestrations and synthwave together with thumping rhythms be it from the piano or bass and drums. The notes seamlessly intertwine moments of grandeur as echoes of nostalgia fill one’s ears.

While each song possesses its own unique identity, they all contribute to the cohesive sonic narrative of Elders. “A Peaceful Way to Defy Them All” is a nocturnal journey through neon-lit streets, with its haunting melodies and shimmering synths while “Nothing but Recall” exudes a nostalgic and dreamlike atmosphere, reminiscent of classic 80s soundtracks where the hero is on the chase to catch that true love. Others are upbeat tempos that combine with pulsating synthwave, and some are lush beats and intricate piano melodies that sweep one to a dreamworld.

For me, Elders is proof to the boundless possibilities and infinite horizons that lie ahead whether it’s this Universe or a parallel one. Those possibilities and infinite horizons aren’t just what one creates, but what one can imagine and dream.

From the sweeping orchestral arrangements to ethereal synths, Elders is majestic and magnificent.
