ALBUM REVIEW: It’s Dread by Pearl Earl

From the indie rock darlings, Pearl Earl, comes their sophomore album It’s Dread.

Rooted in indie rock with a neo psychedelic flair, It’s Dread takes the listener on a voyage through the existential crisis of anxiety and the death of ego.

Ariel Hartley says,

Despite the majority of the album being written during a global pandemic, there is an underlying glimmer of hope and resolution throughout its subversive demeanour

While It’s Dread may be about anxiety, death of the mind, and existential crisis, it is far from that in sound and mood.

It’s Dread musically feels as if it’s more of a trip through the mind, with swirling low-fi guitars, enthralling rhythms from bass and drums, and tantalising vocals.

Title track, “It’s Dread” is full on psychedelic rock at its finest. One is immediately swept into the rabbit hole and feels as if it’s the great-grandchild of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit”.

Songs like “Alien Brew”, “You’re Not a God” invoke Grateful Dead-esque vibes. While songs like “Slime Green”, “Jock Goth” and “Baby Blue Looks Good on Mars” could have been featured in H.R. Pufnstuf or any Sid and Marty Krofft show.

But the closing track, “Miss Milky Way’s Mental Breakdown” is the darling of the album. Seeped in dazzling guitars, groggy synths, echoing bass, and hypnotic drums, the song is quintessential psychedelic indie rock.

It’s Dread by Pear Earl is a musical acid trip through the inner intricacies of the ego.
