ALBUM REVIEW: Metal Gods by Dream Evil

Seven years after their last studio release, Swedish heavy metal veterans Dream Evil have returned with their latest, Metal Gods. It’s a thunderous testament to the band’s enduring passion for metal and the long-awaited album captures the quintessence of classic metal while injecting fresh energy and innovation into its sound.

Formed in the ’90s by guitarists Fredrik Nordström and Gus G., Dream Evil quickly established themselves as torchbearers of the power metal revival. Their early works, including Dragonslayer, Evilized, The Book Of Heavy Metal, and United set a high bar for melodic metal. Continuing this tradition on a grander scale, Fredrik with Niklas Isfeldt on vocals, Peter Stålfors on bass, Markus Fristedt on lead guitar, and Sören Fardvik on drums are ready to place Metal Gods in the pantheon next to their earlier works.

Kicking off with the title track, “Metal Gods” is an anthem that captures the band’s fervour for metal. It’s a high-octane opener that sets the tone for the rest of the record with its blend of blistering riffs and sing-along choruses. Tracks like “The Tyrant Dies At Dawn” and “Fight In The Night” showcase Dream Evil‘s trademark ability to fuse powerful rhythms with epic melodies, while “Chosen Force” and “Y.A.N.A.” bring a darker, more dramatic edge to the album.

The thematic focus of Metal Gods is notably centred on battles and struggles, reflecting a thematic continuity with the band’s earlier work while introducing a fresh narrative perspective. This thematic depth is a nod to the band’s respect for metal’s storied traditions and their commitment to creating music that is both meaningful and exhilarating.

Dream Evil’s return with Metal Gods is a triumphant reaffirmation of their place in heavy metal. The album’s combination of classic metal intensity and modern production makes it a standout release that is bound to thrill long-time fans and newcomers alike.
