ALBUM REVIEW: Mortuary Pantomime by Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam

The delightfully weird-on-purpose rock band, Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam has made their triumphant return with Mortuary Pantomime and it’s a rollicking good time.

Clocking in with 8 tracks and just under 30 minutes, Mortuary Pantomime has infectious track after infectious track. Whether one is bobbing their head to “Gory Ending” or “Thieving” or pumping their fists in solidarity to “We Like Danger”, the album holds a vibe for just about everyone.

Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Tom Livemore at Backbeat Studios, Mortuary Pantomime represents an evolution of Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam’s sound. Building upon the layered college rock style that drew comparisons to Weezer and Titus Andronicus, the band has injected this new material with an added dose of heavy and menacing good fun.

Lead vocalist Andrew Bullock says this on the album,

I think we learned over the years to condense down the length of our tracks to pack a more precise punch, without losing the theme of the individual track. For me this album is the most accurate sounding to our live performance you can get, which is what I love about it. We were very careful with the songs we chose on this record to work together as a whole set. A lot of work went into the record and it’s my favourite S.F.L. album yet.

The band once known for banging out record after record, see their 100+ song discography on Bandcamp, they have learned to slow down and found a formula that works for them – all killer, no filler. Simply meaning that songs that didn’t fit together or songs that they considered would be placeholders would be dumped.

This simple formula is what makes Mortuary Pantomime a goldmine of succulent jams and like all good albums it leaves one only craving for more.
