Malin Andersson‘s sophomore album Space to Feel is an introspective journey through the complexities of human emotion and existential contemplation. With Malin’s hauntingly smooth vocals, each song on the album offers a poignant glimpse into her innermost thoughts and experiences.
On the album Malin says,
“In contrast to my first album, I’ve given myself more time and space on this release, allowing me to be more conscious of choosing the right tunes. The songs mainly reflect the journey I’ve been on, and still am, with accepting my own sensitivity and as a result it’s meant a lot for my own personal development. Along the way I’ve connected with more like-minded people who I can relate to and hope the album encourages others to be themselves, not rush into decisions and give themselves the space to sit with their feelings”.
The soul-stirring reflection on the perpetual uncertainty of existence, “Ships in the Night” kicks off Space to Feel. Set against a backdrop of ethereal melodies that evoke a sense of longing and introspection, Malin’s lyrics ponder the cosmic dance between fate and free will.
“Avalon” is a gentle reminder of the importance of setting boundaries and preserving one’s own emotional well-being. Through delicate guitar chords and lyrics, Malin navigates the delicate balance between empathy and self-preservation, offering solace to fellow empaths and highly sensitive individuals.
While Malin’s voice may be soft and ethereal, she doesn’t fear being vocal about climate change. Like ‘the butterfly effect’, in her soft vocals, Malin roars in “Earth”. With its melancholic melodies and sombre tone, Malin contemplates humanity’s fraught relationship with the environment and the looming spectre of climate change. Malin, like many of us, grapples with feelings of powerlessness and collective apathy and urges one to confront the harsh realities of our ecological crisis.
Continuing to be inspired by the environmental crisis, “Reef” delves even deeper into Malin’s personal struggles as a highly sensitive person. It is a tribute to nature’s fragile beauty and humanity’s role in its destruction. Through her heartfelt lyrics Malin captures the overwhelming anxiety that often accompanies environmental awareness, while also hinting at the possibility of redemption and renewal.
As the album progresses, Malin continues to explore themes of personal growth, emotional resilience, and the fleeting nature of real human connection. Tracks like “Signs” and “Island” offer intimate glimpses into Malin’s inner world, while “How It’s Supposed to Feel” and “Goodluck” grapple with the pain of loss and the search for meaning in the middle of uncertainty.
“Enough” delves into the complexities of new relationships and self-doubt, while “Every Day Holds A Promise” serves as a heartfelt tribute to Malin’s grandmother and is a touching reminder of the power of optimism in the face of adversity.
Through its melodic richness and lyrical gravitas, Space to Feel invites one to embark on a personal journey of self-discovery and introspection, offering solace and inspiration in equal measure.
