ALBUM REVIEW: Sparks – Kimono My House – 50 Years Later

I had the extreme pleasure of see Sparks at the Sydney’s Opera House last year so when Krooked Tongue announced they would be covering “Hasta Manana Monsier” by the iconic band, my interest was piqued.

Formed in the late 60s by brothers Ron and Russell Mael, Sparks has been creating music that is both art and cerebral and influencing others since their inception. As a friend said about Sparksone either gets them or one doesn’t. It’s that simple, yet not that simple.

Kimono My House was the third studio album by the band and as it reaches its fiftieth anniversary, Pale Wizard Records is releasing an anniversary tribute to the album and band, Kimono My House – 50 Years Later. The reimagined tribute album breathes new life into the legendary glam rock sound, featuring interpretations from a diverse lineup of rock bands spanning the globe that include Phoxjaw, Krooked Tongue, Tony Reed, Sergeant Thunderhoof, Besvärjelsen to name a few.

What these artists have done is offer a fresh perspective on the timeless tracks Sparks created. It not only showcases the enduring influence but the relevance of Sparks‘ music. Each band offers their unique touch to the ten tracks and it will introduce their fans to one of the most iconic bands in music history with a back catalogue of studio albums that is twenty-six albums deep.

The tribute is a beautiful ode to a band and an album that changed the course of music history.
