ALBUM REVIEW: Sŵn o’r Stafell Arall by Hyll

Sŵn o’r Stafell Arall, the latest offering from Hyll, is an album that dives into the limbo, specifically the one between adolescence and adulthood.

No matter the era or which generation one may come from, navigating the transition between the two isn’t easy and I suspect it never will be. Some generations may have had it easier but the assumptions are a hindsight look on an experience instead of a survived experience.

With Sŵn o’r Stafell Arall, the quartet decided to return to their indie roots, allowing influences like that of Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, and The Pixies to inspire and instigate a sound that can be heard in such tracks as “Hanner Marathon”, “Mike” “Na”, and “Weekender Forever”.

The riveting bass lines in “North Parade” and “Na” have an Iggy Pop punk vibe that is infectious and heartfelt.

The ten track album, sung predominantly in Welsh, echoes with the reality of growing pains, the hardships of becoming an adult, and the constant longing to return to a life where it was easier.
