ALBUM REVIEW: Teeth by Magana

In her highly anticipated sophomore album, Teeth, (out now) Jeni Magaña, the creative force behind Magana, unveils a mesmerising sonic journey that captivates from start to finish. Drawing on influences ranging from acid folk to krautrock, Magana crafts a spellbinding tapestry of sound that defies easy categorization.

Instrumental interludes serve as poignant pauses in the Teeth‘s narrative and allow for moments of reflection in the swirling and alluring soundscapes Magana has created, but it’s her voice that truly makes the album.

Magana has one of the most compelling voices I’ve heard. She’s able to portray moments of fragility, delicateness, strength, and resilience in one breath and in one note with effortless grace and ease. From the ethereal vocals of “Girl in Chains” to the haunting melodies of “Afraid of Everybody,” each track on Teeth is evidence to Magana‘s songwriting skills but also her artistry. With her lyrics boldly charging into themes of vulnerability and introspection, she invites one to explore the darkest corners of their own psyche.

While Teeth marks a departure from Magana‘s previous works, it showcases a newfound sense of experimentation and sonic exploration. Yet, through the bold experimentation, her signature style shines through, making Teeth an album that doubles as introspective and innovative.

What Teeth shows is Magana’s evolution as an artist and human. With its bewitching melodies, poetic lyrics, and raw emotional power, it is a record that demands to be heard again and again.

In Teeth, Magana has crafted a masterclass in how to be brutally honest and vulnerable while being an elegant and beautiful human soul.
