Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Josh Dummer is a one man show. With the exception of guest vocalists, the man behind Buried Realm does it all. And his upcoming album The Dormant Darkness (April 4th) is no different.
The Dormant Darkness is an intense and technically masterful album that pushes the boundaries of melodic death metal. With its intricate compositions and blistering performances, the album is packed with soaring solos, crushing riffs, and an impressive lineup of guest musicians. It’s both a personal statement and a testament to Josh’s ever-evolving artistry.
The album wastes no time melting faces and assaulting ears. Opening with “Bloodline Artifice,” the track sets the tone with its razor-sharp guitar work, thunderous drumming, and commanding vocals as they paint a picture of betrayal and shattered trust.
From there, “Futuristic Hollow Nation” takes a different route, balancing orchestral elements with a relentless heaviness that creates a haunting atmosphere of isolation and existential dread. Albeit it’s one that’s a visceral punch to the stomach.
Featuring Björn Strid of Soilwork, “Human Code” has high-energy riffing and intricate solos that channel raw aggression into a tightly controlled and electrifying performance. Later, “Jaws of the Abyss” brings another highlight by blending Christian Älvestam’s signature growls and clean vocals with striking synth melodies for a dynamic and emotional climax.
The album’s title track closes things out on a grand scale and features guest appearances from Gus G. and once again Christian Älvestam. The blend of fiery solos, powerful vocals, and orchestration makes for a fittingly triumphant. It’s a finale that underscores the record’s collaborative spirit.
With its face-melting solos, crushing riffs, and raw intensity from start to finish The Dormant Darkness cements Buried Realm as a force in modern melodic death metal. It’s an album that is as intricate as it is unrelenting.
