ALBUM REVIEW: The Wrath Within by Atramentum

Music Review
Shelia Taylor
January 7, 2025

Hamburg’s Atramentum takes a bold step forward with their sophomore album, The Wrath Within (out on January 24th). Clocking in at an ambitious 72 minutes, the 13-track collection showcases the band’s ability to intertwine doom, death, and black metal elements into a sound that feels both ferocious yet finely tuned.

From the haunting opener, “Lighthouse,” to the album’s blistering closer, “The Wrath Within,” the band explores a dynamic range of tempos and textures. The slower, doom-laden passages linger with a foreboding weight, while the faster sections are executed with razor-sharp precision, delivering relentless energy. Tracks like “Lake of My Own Essence” and “Another Life to Die” stand out for their seamless shifts between aggression and brooding introspection.

One of the album’s most striking features is its expanded sonic palette. For the first time, lead vocalist Sebastian Schlenker incorporates clean vocals into the mix, adding a surprising melodic contrast to the harsher growls and shrieks that dominate much of the record. This choice elevates tracks like “Path to Salvation” and “Window,” introducing an emotional dimension that complements the album’s heavier themes.

The production, helmed by Dennis Israel and mastered by Eike Freese at Chameleon Recording Studios, ensures each track hits with maximum impact. The mix is clear yet textured, allowing the intricate guitar work and thundering drums to shine without sacrificing the raw intensity that defines the genre.

Atramentum’s willingness to blend traditional metal influences with unexpected elements, bluesy undertones and even flashes of good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll, sets The Wrath Within apart. It’s a colossal effort that not only builds on the foundation of their debut but also demonstrates their commitment to evolving as artists.
