DEBUT ALBUM REVIEW: A Tale of Fire by Omnivide

Music Review

With their debut album A Tale of Fire mere days away from being released to the masses, Omnivide is more than prepared to embark on an epic metal journey. Hailing from Moncton, Canada, Omnivide is a progressive metal force that emerged from the remnants of the Opeth tribute project, Sunbird, in 2020.

Transcending genre boundaries, Omnivide offers a grandiose and brutal experience that seamlessly fuses elements of progressive, death, and symphonic metal into a cohesive and intriguing package. With each track, Alex Cormier (bass), Nicolas Pierre Boudreau (guitar), Samuel Frenette (guitar and vocals), Samuel Lavoie (keyboards), Marc-André Richard (drums) takes one on a mesmerising journey, alternating between intense heaviness and thought provoking lyrics and rhytms.

“Cosmic Convergence” for example looks into the apocalyptic concept of the Big Crunch, painting a vivid picture of the universe’s eventual demise. With its fast-paced riffs, melodic orchestrations, and haunting vocals, this song epitomises the album’s raw energy and urgency.

On the song, the band says,

“Lyrically, this song is about the Big Crunch, the opposite of the Big Bang, when astrophysicists predict that the universe will stop expanding and instead collapse on itself back to a single, infinitely small and dense point of matter. The lyrics describe this process in a poetic way in the first section of the song, with the final chorus shifting perspectives from that of the universe itself to a single human witnessing this process, with the lines ‘One final cry/Begging not to die/As all we are is swallowed by stars’.”

In contrast, “Opulence” offers a relentless onslaught of brutality, reflecting on humanity’s destructive relationship with the earth. Through thought-provoking lyrics and relentless energy, Omnivide illustrates the power of nature to defend itself against human exploitation.

“Holy Killer,” another highlight from A Tale of Fire, tells the story of a man who commits atrocities in the name of his beliefs, weaving together dark, grandiose melodies with brutal riffing to capture the essence of the narrative.

Throughout A Tale of Fire, Omnivide showcases their musical diversity and storytelling prowess, providing one with a deeply satisfying and rewarding listening experience. From the highs of intense heaviness to the lows of emotional introspection, A Tale of Fire invites one to immerse themselves in its intricacies and complexities.
