DEBUT ALBUM REVIEW: All Gas No Brakes by Heavy Lungs

Heavy Lungs, the punk noise rock ensemble out of Bristol, is ready to take one on a journey of punk infused chaos with their debut album, All Gas No Brakes.

The one question that remains – are you ready to join them in their sonic chaos?

Formed in 2017, Heavy Lungs is a product of their environment that drummer/vocals, George Garrett describes as,

“Living here, it’s hard not to see the scars the city can leave. Like burning your bare leg skin on the exhaust of a motorbike, inconvenient and painful, but not without its equal share of humour and self reflection.”

Heavy Lung’s music reflects the duality scars that the city can leave but also the vibrant life of the city as well.

All Gas No Brakes is an album of punk songs that allow Heavy Lungs to bare their teeth and showcase their relentless hunger for musical exploration. The album, produced with precision by Chris Fullard, boasts a sound that’s larger than life, with layers of amps and big drums that harken back to rock’s grand production tradition.

On the album, George says,

“This album was the eventuality of us settling into a more familiar sonic territory, whereas the string of EPs were the outcome of us changing, finding our feet, and experimenting. We’d write half an album and then Oli would buy a new amp or pedal that would alter our direction, or we’d verge into a different state that would warrant us to punctuate that change with the release of an EP.”

Throughout the record, Heavy Lungs delve into themes of anxiety, guilt, and mental health, but their sharp humour is never far behind. From redefining plagiarism to pondering the inevitability of growing old, mischief and irreverence permeate their music.

The band’s gang mentality allows them to push themselves out of their comfort zones and to push boundaries of their creativity. While it can be heard throughout, tracks like “Head Tilter”, “Matryoshka”, and “All Gas No Brakes” to name a few showcase that exploration of being uncomfortable.

All Gas No Brakes encapsulates years of struggle, resilience, and the pursuit of success. It’s an album that hits hard, leaving an indelible mark on the punk scene and promises an unforgettable and ear-ringing experience for anyone who listens.
