Dylan James‘ debut album, Expected to Fly (November 10th) is a poignant and emotionally charged journey that showcases his talent as a singer-songwriter but also as a storyteller. With Matt Owens of Noah and the Whale at the production helm, the album’s ten tracks look into the complexities of life, tackling topics from that of drunken failings, broken dreams, determination, or parental commitment.
Kicking things off, “Painted It Gold,” a love song sets the tone with its earnest and heartfelt lyrics and instrumentation and the debut single, “Let’s Talk” a powerful anthem that remains incredibly relevant in the mental health awareness conversation.
On the song, Dylan encourages open discussions about mental well-being without judgement and shares this,
In two simple words, ‘Let’s Talk’ summed up my frozen tongue. I couldn’t talk about my feelings; I didn’t know where to start. I would just dig myself another hole hoping it would all go away.
By candidly sharing his struggles, Dylan becomes a beacon of support in a world often plagued by silence.
Tracks like “Black Cloud” and “Hide” exude echoes of the legendary Bob Dylan, not only in Dylan’s voice but in his songwriting.
“Black Cloud” offers kindness and support to those facing internal struggles, while “Hide” reminds us that we’re never truly alone. Both songs have a wonderful fragility about them, while allowing for space helping and healing, no matter where one may be on life’s spectrum.
Life’s constant hustle and bustle finds its voice in the rocker, “Cracking Up.” The harmonica lulls one into the song, making it feel like something right out of the Bob Dylan playbook. This Americana-infused tune not only prompts a pause in one’s busy life but encourages it.
Personal favourite, “Make Up Your Mind” hooks one right from the start with its opening guitar riffs and drumming. With harmonica touches and captivating lyrics, Dylan delivers one of the album’s most infectious jams.
If one is into catchy and danceable tunes, “Boys Yard” is the jam. This toe tapping ditty is packed with driving rhythms, thumping drums, and a catchy bass line. It’s perhaps the most upbeat, groovy track on the album, inviting one to let loose and dance along but also encouraging one to chase those big bold beautiful dreams.
Dylan James’ storytelling shines through on Expected to Fly, as he flawlessly conveys genuine emotions through his lyrics and music. His honesty and integrity permeate every track, making the album not only soar but also touching the soul.
