In the chilling expanse of Iceland’s rugged terrain, where myths and realities intertwine, comes Drungi, a metal quintet that is harnessing the raw energy of their homeland with ferocious audacity. With their debut album, Hamfarir Hugans, out on April 5th, the Icelandic band plunges one into a journey that reverberates with eerie power and emotional depth like that of their homeland.
From the first thunderous chords to the haunting echoes of the final track, Drungi commands attention with a wonderful brew of rock and doom that creates an atmosphere that is at times as heavy, cold, and dark as Iceland’s winters, but also bold and warm like that of Icelandic summers. Like Iceland itself, there are wonderful layers in Hamfarir Hugans. From its heavy music to its haunting melodies, Drungi weaves a web of sound that reminds me at times of the early days of Rammstein and White Zombie when both bands were less polished and more edgy and gritty.
With Sjafnar Björgvinsson on vocals, Rúnar Gunnarsson on lead guitar, Loki Gunnarsson on rhythm guitar, Magnús Ólafsson on bass, and Sandra Bergþórsdóttir on drums, Drungi deliver an intensity that carries the weight of ancient sagas and modern struggles alike. Sjafnar leads one through mental health and personal struggles be it through songs like “Myrkur” (Dark), “Ófærð” (Impass), and “Þoka” (Fog), while the band provides primal and brooding undertones that create a dark heavy sound that is simultaneously melodic and cathartic.
In their native tongue, the lyrics connect the harsh realities of life on the island, where stark beauty and unforgiving landscapes can shape the human experience. Having been to Iceland and seeing the beauty of the country first hand, Hamfarir Hugans is a beautiful soundtrack to the cold and dark that I experienced, but as I said before Hamfarir Hugans is also bold and warm. It may be the soundtrack to the dark but it’s the light in the dark that gives one hope.
Hamfarir Hugans is both exhilarating and emotionally resonant. Each track unfolds like a chapter in an ancient saga, drawing one deeper into Drungi‘s world. Hamfarir Hugans is satisfyingly heavy and melodic and an invitation to embark on a journey through the realms of myth and emotion.
