DEBUT ALBUM REVIEW: L’appel Du Vide by Kir

Music Review
Shelia Taylor
December 7, 2024

Kir’s debut album, L’appel Du Vide, is an intense and atmospheric dive into the depths of urban despair and existential dread. Drawing from the raw energy of black metal and the introspective chaos of psychedelic sounds, the Kraków-based duo of Harvest and Ferment create a sonic experience that’s haunting and absorbing. With themes of isolation, monotony, and self-destruction woven into the fabric of its tracks, the album is as unsettling as it is captivating.

Opening with “DestinationVoid,” Kir sets the stage with eerie field recordings that pull one into the heart of Kraków’s dimly lit streets by blurring the lines between reality and dream. Tracks like “Monument” and “Znów” channel relentless energy and introspection by reflecting the endless cycles of monotony and hopelessness within urban life. The standout “Eter” amplifies this with crushing riffs and melancholic overtones and embodies the isolation and dissonance that is at the album’s core.

Using cinematic inspiration to paint a harrowing picture of humanity’s self-destruction, the finale, “Apoptosis,” is a slow-burning lament that soars beyond its black metal roots. With every track tied together by Ferment’s gritty production and the visceral intensity of Krzysztof Klingbein’s sessions drumming, L’appel Du Vide pushes the boundaries of black metal with a layered and atmospheric journey.

Kir’s bold exploration of the “call of the void” within us all makes L’appel Du Vide a stunning debut. For those ready to confront life’s most unsettling impulses, L’appel Du Vide is a dark yet unforgettable experience.
