Portuguese blackened death metal outfit Aoidos deliver a stunning debut with Oizys (out November 29th), a conceptually rich and musically intense album that merges storytelling with dynamic sounds. Drawing inspiration from Greek mythology and personal struggles, the band crafts an intricate narrative of anxiety, transformation, and resilience, backed by a fusion of blackened atmospheres and death metal ferocity.
The album opens with “Dieaed,” a brief but cinematic piece that lays a haunting foundation for the themes explored throughout. “Thrall,” an unrelenting force of guitars and percussion, is one of the heaviest moments, stripping back the piano-driven melodies for pure auditory chaos. “Fire” offers a poignant reflection on survival and loss, with layers of sound that evoke both destruction and resolve.
The title track, “Oizys,” serves as the emotional core, portraying the struggles of mental health with an urgent and driving intensity. In “Trauma,” the band incorporates Portuguese lyrics, adding a personal touch to the layered composition. The acoustic interlude, “Old Ballad,” provides a moment of respite before “The Wheels” erupts into anthemic energy, showcasing thrash and punk elements that heighten its visceral impact.
“Black Swan” explores catastrophic unpredictability with thunderous rhythms and sweeping melodies, while “From the Surface Grate” dives into bleak narratives inspired by Warhammer 40,000. The closing duo, “Slumber” and “All! Wherever! Always!” embrace experimental textures, using eerie instrumentation and chaotic arrangements to bring the album to an unsettling yet cathartic conclusion.
