DEBUT ALBUM REVIEW: Olew Nadroedd by SYBS

Music Review

SYBS‘ debut album, Olew Nadroedd, is a vibrant canvas filled with the colours of youth, uncertainty, and endless creativity. Each track is a brushstroke in a larger portrait of the exhilarating yet daunting journey through young adulthood, where the world beckons with both promise and trepidation.

Led by songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist Osian Llŷr, SYBS embarks on a sonic exploration that mirrors the whirlwind of experiences and emotions that define this transformative period of life. With Olew Nadroedd, the band captures the essence of their formative years, channelling the chaos and energy of youth into a cacophony of vibrant sounds and introspective lyrics.

Osian explains,

“I think what we wanted to achieve with Olew Nadroedd is a snapshot of where we were as a band when a lot these songs came to fruition; when we were still experimenting with finding our sound, and where we opened ourselves up to a world of musical influences where anything goes.”

Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of musical influences, from the eclectic collages of Yo La Tengo to the genre-defying experiments of Cornelius, SYBS creates a kaleidoscopic soundscape that defies easy categorization. Each song is a fusion of styles and genres, yet all emanate from the same source, reflecting the band’s willingness to embrace the unknown and venture into uncharted territory.

At the centre of Olew Nadroedd lies a sense of restlessness and introspection, mirrored in the reflective, anxious, and uncertain lyrics that intertwine with the vibrant, noisy, and almost hyperactive instrumentation. It’s evidence of the polarity of youth…the enthusiasm and curiosity for the world tempered by a nagging sense of doubt and uncertainty.

Olew Nadroedd is a bold and exhilarating debut and SYBS reminds one to embrace the chaos, uncertainty, and boundless possibilities of young adulthood with open arms..

So, dive in, and let the vibrant sounds of Olew Nadroedd wash over you, as you embark on a journey of discovery with SYBS by your side.
