DEBUT EP REVIEW: Fables by Leisure FM

Embarking on a creative journey under the moniker leisure fm, Polish twins Milena & Weronika Szymanek offer a mesmerising four-track EP titled fables, a poignant exploration delving into the shadowy landscapes of lost love, melancholy, and existential introspection.

Originally from Poland, the sisters’ childhood move to Wales eventually led them to find their artistic haven in South East London. Fuelled by their shared penchant for experimentation and late-night musings, the duo sought solace from lockdown blues by immersing themselves in music while also curating DJ sets and hosting a monthly show on RTM.FM.

Within fables, the ethereal vocals, reminiscent of the resonances of PJ Harvey and Siouxsie Sioux, delicately intertwine with a tapestry of guitars, strings, and pulsating drums. Through lyrical storytelling, the EP paints a vivid emotional landscape, capturing the poignant duality of love’s ephemeral nature and its enduring optimism.

The sisters say this about the EP,

“Making fables has helped us work through some difficult feelings and we hope it has a similar cathartic effect on anyone who listens to it.”

While fables draws from the raw emotions of heartache, heartbreak, and the embrace of life’s truths, the track “statuesque” stands as an ode to literary and cinematic masterpieces. Its accompanying video gracefully weaves found archive footage, imbuing it with a transcendental quality reminiscent of the timeless allure found in William Blake‘s literary works and the evocative essence of 1970s cinema.

fables intricately melds poeticism with pop sensibilities, offering a narrative that not only captivates but also beckons for deeper exploration. It extends an invitation for listeners to immerse themselves in its enigmatic, emotionally charged, and entrancing sonic landscapes.
