DEBUT EP REVIEW: Licorice by Camille Scipio

Have you ever encountered a song, or better yet, an EP or album, that seemed to make your soul exhale in relief? In her debut EP, Licorice, Kamille Scipio‘s enchanting vocals cast a spell of surrender and tranquillity across four graceful tracks.

Based in Brooklyn, Kamille is a jack of all trades – a musician, artist, and producer – whose soulful melodies effortlessly captivate and linger in the heart. Opening the EP is “Long Before,” a tender homage to sound and a showcase of Kamille’s mezzo-soprano voice. Clocking in at just over two and a half minutes, the song’s brevity leaves one yearning for more.

Transitioning seamlessly into “Houndstooth,” Kamille’s voice dances gracefully with lush beats and melodies, creating an immersive sonic experience. “Contender,” a previously released track, offers a poignant reflection on innocence lost, with raw and honest vocals that resonate deeply.

Bringing the EP to a close is “Wish You Were Here,” another previously released single that showcases Kamille’s artistry. With its infectious beats and soulful delivery, the song evokes the timeless charm of 50s and 60s female vocalists, infused with the contemporary flair of artists like Amy Winehouse.

On the song Kamille says,

“‘Wish You Were Here’ is a song about insatiability. I think I’d mostly become fed up with how things were panning out between me and someone I thought was pretty cool. Turns out it was the feeling they’d given me that was worth sticking around for – the waking up to just how deep my longing goes. That was very thrilling. Wish You Were Here feels like a breath of fresh air and a rare track from a time spent writing really sad songs.”

Licorice is not just an EP; it’s a soul-stirring experience that leaves one craving for more.
