Spearheaded by Australian artist Mitchy McIvor, General Mack’s Grapeshot delivers a potent mix of disorienting fuzz and wistful melody with their debut single, “Grenades & Stomach Flu.”

From the get-go, “Grenades & Stomach Flu” plunges one into a world of gritty and distorted guitar riffs that are reminiscent of the sonic experimentation of Beck and The Kills. Weaving a blend of lo-fi and fuzzed-out textures with shimmering synths create a dense fabric of sound that is both hypnotic and unsettling.

Venturing into abstract territory, “Grenades & Stomach Flu” lyrically explores time and existential futility through imagery of a fractured reality and a refrain that symbolises the disruptive forces beyond one’s control. This poetic approach is complemented by the single’s visual element, a music video featuring scenes from the 1963 film The Yesterday Machine. The film’s absurdist imagery aligns seamlessly with the song’s exploration of time and its impact.

As General Mack’s Grapeshot’s first endeavour, “Grenades & Stomach Flu” it’s a bold statement and a promising start for an artist that skillfully combines sonic experimentation with lyrical depth.
