Welsh borderlands breed more than just picturesque landscapes; they also nurture raw talent, as evidenced by the emergence of Eaten By Lions. This new indie rock trio has been making waves in the music scene, garnering attention for their electrifying performances and thought-provoking lyrics.
Fresh off their selection for the esteemed Isle of Wight Festival New Blood competition in London, where they triumphed among over 5,000 national entries, Eaten By Lions are poised for greatness. Their meteoric rise continued with a runner-up placement in a national battle of the bands last July, solidifying their status as ones to watch.
Their debut single “Psycho” is an upbeat track that delves into themes of alienation, paranoia, and the struggles faced by contemporary artists within the confines of the music industry. With echoes of Nirvana’s iconic sound, “Psycho” serves up a nostalgic blend of Britpop and ’90s grunge, appealing to a new generation of disenchanted youth.
Frontman and Jake Hughes offers this insight to their recently released sophomore track, “Night Falls Away,”
“‘Night Falls Away’ is a bit of a protest song against the current government and the feelings of anxiety, apathy and powerlessness which my generation feels in an increasingly hopeless society. The narrative also references our addiction to social media platforms like Instagram and the feeling that we are living in an unequal and less idealistic society, ever closer to a dystopian future.”
Jake further adds,
“It is quite a tense, existential song really! The first lines talk about standing on a bridge, looking down at the river, kind of pondering life/death, which is partly influenced by the start of a Herman Hesse novel which has a paranoid, suicidal main character. Where I live there is a high bridge over the river Wye, and walking over it always reminds you of your mortality/resisting the temptation to jump. The rest of the song kind of runs its course based on that.”
With their music drawing comparisons to iconic acts like Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, and Nirvana, Eaten By Lions are carving out their own unique sound while staying true to their indie rock roots. As Eaten By Lions continue to captivate audiences with their electrifying performances and socially conscious lyrics, it’s clear that they are destined for greatness in the indie rock scene. Keep an eye on this rising trio as they set the stage ablaze with their unapologetic brand of musical rebellion.
