DISCOVER: Irked

In the heart of Newcastle’s vibrant DIY punk scene emerges a force to be reckoned with: Irked. The self-proclaimed punk “supergroup” is ready to shake up the world with their debut self-titled EP, slated for release on May 17th. Spearheaded by vocalist and lyricist Helen ‘Hells’ Walkinshaw, Irked is both a band and a rallying cry against the status quo, a fervent expression of defiance, and a celebration of punk’s unyielding spirit.

Formed in 2022, the members of Irked are seasoned veterans from the UK DIY scene. The illustrious pedigrees of Mike Hill on bass, Simon ‘Hub’ Hubbard on guitar, Sean Kenny on guitar, Zach McDade on drums, and Helen are creating a potent cocktail of snotty punk anthems with politically charged lyrics and irreverent humour.

At the forefront of their sonic assault is their latest single, “Move,” a blistering anthem that captures the frustrations of the elusive work-life balance in today’s tumultuous world. With searing guitars, thunderous drums, and Helen’s commanding vocals, “Move” serves as a potent reminder of the band’s uncompromising ethos and unapologetic defiance.

But Irked‘s sonic manifesto doesn’t stop there. Their debut single, “Backstreets” is a pointed and in your face ode to the creepers of the local music scene.

With their debut album on the horizon and a reputation as BBC Introducing’s ‘Ones to Watch 2024,’ Irked is poised to become a formidable presence in the punk landscape. So, buckle up, brace yourself, and get ready to join the rebellion because Irked is here to soundtrack the revolution.
