EP REVIEW: A Beginning by Dreams Of Gray

Music Review

Dreams of Gray’s A Beginning is the kind of release that proves how extreme metal can be. It’s brutal, beautiful, and intelligent all at once. Luis Rivera, the project’s mastermind, has built an EP that doesn’t simply recycle the genre’s trademarks but sharpens them into a form that feels both deliberate and personal. What makes A Beginning so strong is the balance Luis strikes between ferocity and control. The riffs hit hard, the drums crush, the growls cut deep, but every passage feels sculpted with purpose rather than sheer aggression for its own sake.

The opener and title track sets the stage by moving through contrasts of haunting melodic passages that collide with surging heaviness. Luis seamlessly switches between growls and clean vocals but rather than leaning on repetition, the song unfolds like a narrative. One that captures both rage and reflection in equal measure. This constant shifting of gears keeps one engaged without ever feeling disjointed.

By leaning into thrash energy with death metal weight, “Beyond the Sky” delivers the EP’s most direct attack. It’s a track built for velocity, but Luis threads in melody so the speed never turns into blur. The fact that the song simultaneously works as a stage anthem and a meditation on life beyond mortality shows how carefully he uses the genre’s intensity as a vehicle for bigger questions rather than an end in itself.

The closing piece, “Across the Endless Sea,” is perhaps the most ambitious moment of the trio. It draws from multiple traditions. Specifically melodic death, traces of black metal texture, and even classic heavy metal choruses but it never feels erratic or disjointed. The clean vocals push Luis into a new territory that feels experimental but immediately memorable. It’s a closer that doesn’t just wrap up the EP, but expands the band’s horizon.

What sets Dreams of Gray apart from countless extreme metal projects is not only Luis’ command of the form but his story. A physician by trade and a musician by conviction, he channels the intensity of his life experience into music that feels lived-in rather than performative. This sense of authenticity elevates A Beginning from being just another heavy record to one that feels necessary. Both for its creator and one looking for something that can balance savagery with substance.

A Beginning, Dreams of Gray
