Callas, the Cork-based post-rock and experimental metal outfit, unveils their latest EP, Days on July 26. Formed by Dom Murphy (vocals, guitars, keys), Cormac Shanley (bass), Ruairi Lynch (guitars, production), and Evan Prendergast (drums), Callas brings a new dimension to the genre and a mesmerizing journey through ambient soundscapes and profound themes.
Callas crafts a sound that is both heavy and ethereal in Days. As the three tracks take one on a journey through moments of sorrow, renewal, and the raw beauty of nature, each track is designed to summon strong emotions while blending intricate layers of sound with contemplative lyrics.
The title track, “Days,” opens the EP with a sweeping blend of energy, radiance, poignant melodies. It captures the essence of the band’s current creative vision, balancing drama with a serene, dreamlike quality.
Presenting a haunting exploration of contrast, “Sunlight” is the paradox of feeling profound sadness amidst brightness and builds to an emotional with soaring vocals over a backdrop of intense instrumentation.
Closing with the minimalist and evocative piece, “Porous”, the song stands out with its haunting vocals and subtle music. It shows the band’s ability to convey emotions through simplicity. It provides a stark, beautiful conclusion Days and highlights the experimental nature of Callas‘ music.
Days is majestic and Callas is fearless and the combination of the two make for great listening if one is seeking something that is both emotional and sonically adventurous.
