EP REVIEW: Irretrospective: Part 3 by Async Await

Async Await, the one man project of Mike Sorensen, is back with the final instalment of the Irretrospective EP series. Out on January 19th, Irretrospective: Part 3 continues to see the evolution of the electronic alt rock sound of the multi-instrumentalist.

The Irretrospective series are twelve songs that were written between 2008 and 2021 that are part of Async Await’s journey of self-discovery and understanding. On the EP, Mike says,

“Irretrospective Part 3” is the final instalment of the Irretrospective series of EPs and its conceptual culmination. This one focuses on transitioning from depression into a state of reflection and self-improvement, which was in my case the last step in looking back on the past decade and deciding how to move forward with my life, both personally and artistically. Async Await will continue on after this but with new found emotional and creative freedom. This EP, and the whole series, has been a documentation of my journey to this point.”

While Irretrospective: Part 2 used fuzzy distorted electronics and explored synth textures, Irretrospective: Part 3 feels as if Async Await has completed not only the journey of self-discovery but completed the past exploration of sound and is now reaping the rewards of the seeds he previously sown with Part 1 and Part 2.

There’s less of a chemical reaction like in Part 2 and more of a distinct growth in sound, confidence, and attitude.

Stand out track, “Just Be Yourself” is the epitome of that growth. Its rapid pace is chock full of gritty riffs, brooding vocals, and a great message to be one’s self unless you’re a douchebag. Another stand out track, “Above My Epitaph” is fun and effervescent with its 80s synth vibe and killer bass line.

Through its daring experimentation of weaving synths and beats that guide one through a renewal of self, Irretrospective: Part 3 is the completion of a therapeutic musical journey.
