I have one complaint about Emily Breeze’s follow up to her highly acclaimed 2023 album, Rapture, her EP, Second Rodeo (April 19) is only four tracks.
That aside, in the melodic tapestry of her latest work of art, listeners are treated to a kaleidoscope of storytelling with each track being a vibrant brushstroke on the canvas of life. Second Rodeo dives deeper into the labyrinth of human experience, weaving together tales of love, longing, and the tumultuous journey of existence.
With Second Rodeo, Emily invites us into her world. A realm where the lines between reality and fantasy blur, and where the echoes of late 90s teenage escapades reverberate alongside beatnik-inspired hymns and cosmic musings on the nature of relationships. From the nostalgic allure of “1997,” which paints a vivid portrait of adolescent rituals and youthful dreams, to the breakneck intensity of “The Beatniks,” where words cascade like a torrential downpour of poetic fervour, Emily showcases her talent as a master storyteller that effortlessly traverses the landscapes of emotion and imagination.
Yet, it is in the track “We Were Lovers” that Emily’s artistry truly shines. She takes us on a multiverse-spanning odyssey, exploring the cosmic dance of love and loss across dimensions unknown. With each verse, we are swept away on a journey through the ebb and flow of relationships, the highs and lows of human connection, and the eternal quest for understanding in a vast and ever-expanding universe.
The unexpected and delightful transformation of “Graceland” into a fuzzed-out shoegaze masterpiece pays homage to Paul Simon‘s iconic anthem while adding Emily’s own unique flair. With swirling guitars and ethereal vocals, she breathes new life into the beloved classic, infusing it with a sense of urgency and introspection that is both haunting and exhilarating.
Emily Breeze proves herself to be not only a musician but a storyteller of the highest order. With each track of Second Rodeo, she invites us to peel back the layers of existence, to explore the depths of the human soul, and to revel in the beauty of life’s infinite complexities. Emily Breeze once again defies categorisation and transcends genre and convention to create something truly extraordinary.
