Formidable and delicate are not often paired together, but that’s just what The Deep Blue are.
With their EP, Sugarcoat, now available to the masses, the Manchester four piece are showing off delicate sides with tracks, “Lakehouse” and “Lost Boy” and their formidable side with “How About It”.
Sugarcoat kicks off with the infectiously poppy track, “How About It” that is reminiscent of Haim and a little bit of lyrical Taylor Swift peppered in. The song is the most upbeat track on the EP. Not only are the harmonies fun and vibrant, so is the music.
The band’s empathy and writing prowess shines through the song, “Lost Boy” and the band says this about the song,
Singing this song makes our hearts ache a little bit as our minds are inevitably drawn to someone we love who has lost their way. Clinging on to their youth just a little too tightly. Perhaps we all know a boy who has never made peace with adulthood? The life of the party and always the last to leave? It’s not only about those people, ‘Lost Boy’ is also an ode to the young child within us all.
Amidst the darker moments of “Lost Boy” there is a feeling of upliftment and hope in the song and it’s because of The Deep Blue’s poetic and powerful writing.
Exploring human emotions, “Lakehouse” allows for reflection and finding solace not only in music, but in the lyrics. The band rips the band aid off and explores the hurt with visceral emotions.
On “Lakehouse” the band says
‘Lakehouse’ is a very special song to us and the most emotionally raw on the EP. It’s an ode to the paradox of fearing vulnerability whilst longing for connection. Sometimes the words are just too heavy to say out loud.
Closing out Sugarcoat are the pitch perfect harmonies of “Something Good”. The short song captures both the formidable and delicate sides that is The Deep Blue.
By baring their souls in Sugarcoat, The Deep Blue have created an intimate connection and experience that allows the listener to courageously explore and bare their own souls.
Sugarcoat is out on all streaming platforms.
