EP & SHORT FILM REVIEW: Life After Her by Apache Grosse

The EP, Life After Her by Apache Grosse is an experience that is both auditory and visual. The auditory, Life After Her was released mid December with the visual of the same name to follow on January 25th.

Life After Her follows Apache’s debut After Her. One will be hard pressed to find the debut’s existence on the interwebs as Apache explained in a 2018 interview with Chicago Creatives why he removed it. Nonetheless, one does not need to listen to After Her to understand Life After Her.

The title itself beckons reflection: does it signify life after the debut, after the complexities of romantic entanglements, or perhaps both intertwined? Regardless, Life After Her serves as a sequel and is an investigation of an overwhelmed ego, the transient instances of deep affection, detachment from success, and discovering one’s authenticity.

The five song collection is a rich mix of beats and vocal swagger. There are succulent moments of synths, dramatic beats, and soulful vocals that express Apache’s own journey through his career and what he sacrificed for it – love.

The accompanying short film of Life After Her unfolds as a series of interconnected chapters, challenging viewers to confront perceptions of reality. Directed by Daniel Mayúgba, the visual interpretation beautifully captures the nuanced essence of the lyrics and Apache’s emotive vocals. Each chapter, intricately crafted, becomes a gateway to a visually stunning exploration of the song’s lyrics and music.

Life After Her serves not just as an artistic creation but as a thought-provoking reflection on the sacrifices inherent in following one’s trajectory. Through both the auditory and visual components, Apache Grosse prompts a fundamental inquiry: what price does one pay for the chosen path?
