Be still my beating heart. The latest single, “A Man As Alive as the City” from The Boxer Rebellion is wonderful. Just wonderful.
From their forthcoming EP, Open Arms (February 14th), the song is infused with a brilliant and infectious bass line from Adam Harrison that is for me the focal point of the song. Accompanying Adam on the rhythm journey, drummer Piers Hewitt provides a beat that feels oddly timed yet is in perfect sync with his rhythm partner in crime. This almost tit for tat interplay between the two builds a foundation that allows for guitarist Andrew Smith and vocalist Nathan Nicholson to lose themselves emotionally amongst not only the music but the words.
Nathan says this about the song,
“‘A Man As Alive As The City’ is a feeling more than anything. It’s about restlessness and change. I find it hard a lot of times to unwind, like I have electricity in my veins, constantly overthinking and moving like a city that never sleeps.”
“A Man As Alive As The City” will share audio space with previous singles “Powdered Sugar” and “There’s Lightness Out of Darkness” and like the previous two songs prove that The Boxer Rebellion are masters at crafting timeless songs again and again.
