HOT TRACK: “Bigger” by Merpire

Dark, alluring, and slightly dangerous, Merpire’s latest single, “Bigger,” is a thrilling and shape-shifting piece of dark pop that captures the headrush of desire with striking urgency. From her forthcoming album MILK POOL (July 4th), the track’s sharp contrasts, its intimate verses, and the brash, surf-rock-inspired chorus give it a pulse that feels both reckless yet hypnotic.

Produced by James Dring, “Bigger” starts with a nostalgic cassette sample before diving into a blend of moody synths, jagged guitar work, and off-kilter rhythms. The three-minute runtime keeps every moment taut with energy and leads to a chorus that erupts like a fever dream. It’s an electrified collision of indie charm and late-2000s alt-pop edge that hammers home Merpire’s ability to craft songs that feel both alluring and slightly unhinged.

Merpire herself describes the song as “the most exciting song on the record”, a sentiment that rings true in every twist and turn of its arrangement. The track’s tension reaches its peak in a striking middle-eight section, written on a London bus en route to a rare in-person session with producer James Dring. His production choices bring out the song’s darker and more seductive undercurrents and it was something Merpire embraced fully.

I was in love with the first thing he sent back. He nailed the dark, sexy, sinister mood.

With “Bigger,” Merpire delivers a potent dose of unfiltered passion, transforming fleeting moments of longing into something grand and electrifying.
