HOT TRACK: “Danced Alone (who I am when I’m in love)” by Humm

Contemporary folk duo, Humm, will enchant listeners once again with their latest single, “Danced Alone (who I am when I’m in love).”

Formed in 2018, the duo, Arty Jackson and Carys Lewin, have been weaving music magic with their finger-style guitar and their harmonious delicate vocals that sends one to time where dusk sets and the supernatural beings of one’s imagination comes to life.

If one were to consider their favourite childhood fairy tale coming to life, then Humm would be the creator of the pivotal and ethereal theme song for it.

While drawing inspiration from Joni Mitchell to Eels to Radiohead and more, their eclectic blend has allowed Humm to carve out a unique signature sound that defies genre boundaries. That sound continues to shine with “Danced Alone (who I am when I’m in love)” that was produced, mixed and mastered by Josh Clark.

On first listen, it was easy for me to imagine that this song was the theme song for Gil in Woody Allen’s 2011 film, Midnight in Paris.

On the song, the band state,

“It is a love letter to the newly lonely, exploring the difficulties of losing yourself within a relationship and finding yourself in the aftermath. This song is a reminder for you to love and appreciate yourself and the beautiful world around you.”

The reminder is captured effortlessly and magically within “Danced Alone (who I am when I’m in love)”. Through the sharp and touching lyrics, quiet guitar work, and harmonies, Humm has crafted a beautiful song that reflects on the lessons of navigating one of life’s most complex emotions…love.
