I recently saw an Instagram reel asking where were all the rock bands at and it got me wondering myself, actually where are all the rock bands. The late nineties and early naughts had fantastic rock bands that blazed trails and pumped out infectious hooky tunes one right after another. Green Day, Marvelous 3, All American Rejects, Story of the Year, Taking Back Sunday, Jimmy Eat World, etc, etc, etc.
I want to blame Kevin Lyman and the disappearance of Vans Warped Tour for our loss of good ol’ rock bands.
The good news is that the bands are out there, but instead of discovering them on a festival lineup, one has to stumble upon the band and like the 80’s Faberge Organics commercial (below), tell two friends so they can tell two friends, and so on and so on and so on. That’s one of the reasons this website was started, to share music that others may not have heard yet and to share music that we all like or discovered.
One recently discovered band is Canada’s Waterfront. Less Vans Warped Tour pop punk and more Vans Warped Tour pure rock, the quintet of Dan Sequeira (vocals), Tanner Cyr (bass and backing vocals), Devin Taylor (rhythm guitar), Ryan Ross (lead guitar), and Benjamin Forseth (drums) have just followed up their insanely catchy “I Wanna Run” with “Keeping You Alive” from their forthcoming EP.
Like its predecessor, “Keeping You Alive” has a to die for bassline that seems to pulse with a life of its own. The duelling guitars weave mesmerising melodies in a harmonious dance that adds depth and richness to the song. The foundation of the song is the rhythmic and powerful drumming and the vocals command attention while simultaneously charging the listener with emotions.
It’s pure f’n rock.
And I love it.
Waterfront gives me mad hope for rock’s future.
