It doesn’t take a degree in quantum physics to understand the title or lyrics of “Liar Liar” from Leeds band VENUS GRRRLS (stylised in all caps).
Fronted by Grace Kelly (GK) who is also on rhythm guitars, Hannah Barraclough on bass, Eliza Lee on lead guitar, Grace Stubbings on synth and Gabby Cooke on drums, the group throw a one two punch at narcissistic abusers while giving the assist to those on the receiving of the abuse.
On the song, GK say,
‘Liar Liar’ took some time to finish, both lyrically and instrumentally. The topic, often very personal and contextual, was something I wanted to make sure was adequately represented despite its vast nature. The idea was that the ‘narrator’ of the song has become aware of the dynamic of another relationship, and that it isn’t necessarily a good dynamic. Spotting patterns of emotional manipulation and abuse, the narrator seeks not only to empower the victim but to let the perpetrator know that they’ve figured out what’s happening despite the ‘games’.
While keeping in spirit of the riot grrrl culture, VENUS GRRRLS is less punk and more alternative rock, reminding me of 90’s bands like Veruca Salt, the Breeders, Liz Phair, and Hole.
While both pointed and empowering, “Liar Liar” has a glossy and effortless bravado with its melodies and harmonies from the vocals to the music. The combination makes the song not only appealing but anthem-esque and infectious.
