Thank you Youtube for suggesting Slothrust. Without any knowledge of the band I clicked on the video link for two reasons – Slothrust is a freaking fabulous name for a band and I wondered if the song would be a cover of Ginuwine’s hit.
I was not disappointed.
Goddamn did they do a damn perfect cover of “Pony”.
Perfection. People. Perfection.
From their forthcoming EP, I Promise (October 20, Dangerbird Records), Slothrust is Leah Wellbaum (songwriter, guitar player) and Will Gorin (drums). Their upcoming EP will include two new singles “Maybe Maybe” and “Magic Glow”, and on their sound, Will says,
I feel like we have developed our own unique sound to the point where we can ask ourselves ‘what would Slothrust do? The paradox being that if we knew, we would do the opposite.
What’s magical about “Pony” is how Slothrust took an already sexy song and amped up the sex appeal to 11. The bass is heavy and groovy and the dirty guitar matches the seductive groove note for note and tying it all together are the drums and Leah’s vocals.
“Pony” is easily one of the best tracks of 2023. While you’re watching this masterpiece, I’ll be going through Slothrust’s entire back catalogue.
