There’s an honest fragility and empowering strength within the vocals of Canada’s Christina Martin. At moments she dances towards Joni Mitchell, but more often than not, she is grounded in her own vocal styling.
At the heart of her upcoming album lies the title track, “Storm”, a splendid showcase of Christina’s distinctive vocals. Initially inspired by Hurricane Juan that landed on Nova Scotia’s coast in 2004, the song has undergone a metamorphosis, evolving into an exploration of how life’s experiences, both good and bad, shape who one becomes.
On the song and album title, Christina says,
I chose ‘Storm’ as the title track for this album because it represents the failures and hard times that help me become a better person.
If the failures and hardships Christina encountered were instrumental in her personal growth then it too moulded her into an even more profound songwriter and singer. “Storm” allows her ethereal and airy vocals to gracefully float in tranquillity like the eye of the storm, while the music envelops listeners in the powerful swell of an oncoming tempest, building momentum and eventually fading into the night.
The accompanying video by Matt Charlton gives a behind the scenes glimpse and a performance. On the video, Matt says,
I wanted to make something that explores how much time, thought, and effort Christina puts into her music. I think she’s really an outstanding artist, but it’s also inspiring to see all the work she does to make that art come to life. This video was inspired by seeing her go through that process for her amazing new album.
Baring her soul through every note she sings with vocals that embrace vulnerability and strength in equal measure, Christina Martin and “Storm” will empower one to forge on when they come across the bad and to celebrate the good, but to also never forget the lessons that both may bring.
Storm will be out September 1.
