No one captures the essence of 80’s synth vibes quite like Davey Oberlin‘s project, All the Damn Vampires.
When it comes to understanding and replicating the vibe of the music of the 80s, All the Damn Vampires excel. The sounds weren’t just beats and synths, it was the way they evoked a mood, an energy, a vibe, or a feeling. The music created the emotional background, key moments, or the soundtrack to so many lives. Just as those lives inspired the beats and synths to make magic.
And understanding that is why All the Damn Vampires excels.
The synths and beat arrangements are gorgeous as usual and would suffice on their own. But this is where mastermind Davey shines with All the Damn Vampires. His vocal collaborations on his tracks are sheer perfection. This detail can make or break a song. The wrong voice could grind the song to a halt but the right vocals make the song soar.
And in collaborating with Mint Simon again, “The Lies We Tell Ourselves at Night” soars in part to the music and in part to Min’ts voice. The two artists not only understand each other and the song, but the era so loved by many members of Generation X, myself included. Mint’s voice was made to work with All the Damn Vampires. Their voice conveys the lost feeling, love, lust, and wonder of not only the era but of All the Damn Vampire’s music.
“The Lies We Tell Ourselves At Night” is once again perfection from All the Damn Vampires. It not only perfectly captures a moment of heartbreak, but also a moment of strength. All choreographed to beautiful synths and beats, with stirring vocals, and an infectious energy that makes one want to get out the neon and day glo.
