HOT TRACKS: “New York” and “L.A. Hex” by The Kills

There is something effortlessly cool about The Kills

Be it the swagger of Alison Mosshart or the quiet confidence of Jamie Hince, the duo exude a stylish, elegant, and smart credence that many artists want but fail to achieve.

But The Kills…they make it seem like it’s as easy as breathing. Perhaps for them, it is.

Formed in 2001, The Kills remain underground darlings. Their albums place higher and higher in the charts as they’re released, but unbeknownst to the why, they remain just on the cusp of mainstream success. Aside from 2018’s live album and single, Live at Electric Lady Studios and “List of Demands (Reparations)” respectively, and 2020’s compilation album Little Bastards, The Kills have been relatively quiet since their 2016 album, Ash & Ice.

Quiet no more…The Kills have released not one but two songs and they’re the epitome of the effortless cool vibe the duo transmit in everything they do.

On the two songs, the band says,

Two coasts, two cities, two places that mean a lot to us.

from The Kills Facebook

Both songs feel as if they are a beautiful blend of songs from Keep On Your Mean Side (2003) and Blood Pressures (2011). There’s a refinement to lyrics, music, and vocals. That refinement and finesse shines through The Kills song after song and album after album.

They’re a band that grows with each release and they don’t shy away from exploring new ways to convey their music but no matter the growth or exploration, they’re always rooted in who The Kills have always authentically been…a confident, massively talented, underestimated, rock band.

Despite having songs on multiple movies and shows, I hope with “New York” and “L.A. Hex”, The Kills break free of the shackles that hold them on the cusp of mainstream success as their music and talent need to be seen and heard by all.

“New York” and “L.A. Hex” are indispensable songs in the arsenal of The Kills talent. They both showcase not only great lyricism and musicianship but what makes The Kills that effortless cool and put together person we all hope to be.
