NPR compares the vocal and writing prowess of Casii Stephan to the likes of Florence Welch, Fiona Apple, and Carole King. Heavy weight names to be compared to whether one is a new artist or established. Kicking off her musical career in 2016, Cassi writes music that dives into her well of her emotions, penning lyrics that confront societal norms like sexism, ageism, and the expectations placed on women to conform to niceties.
In her most recent single, “A Song for You,” Casii showcases her powerful and emotive vocals while paying homage to the soulful Leon Russell.
Recorded in one take at The Church Studio in Tulsa, Casii confides,
I believe this song is one of the greatest when it comes to best-written love songs. It’s also just not an easy song to cover. Part of me viewed this as a challenge to myself and the other part viewed it as a way to express my respect for what Leon did as a songwriter and musician. Recorded in one take (It was Take #4), it forced me to accept the performance with all its nuances just like the song describes the acceptance between the two lovers. It ain’t perfect and that’s the beauty of it.
She further adds this comment on her Youtube,
It was just supposed to be a song I performed at a friend’s wedding. And then the song discovered me, and a few years later, here I am recording my version of this iconic song at The Church Studios.
Soul-stirring, heartfelt, and raw, Casii Stephan‘s rendition of “A Song for You” transcends the ordinary, evoking a deep emotional connection.
