With the combined forces of frontman Ben Davies (composer, guitarist and vocals), Henry Hewkin (bass), Pedro Tolloto (guitar) and Sam McLean (drummer), Leicester’s Spellgaze are reaching their one year anniversary mark in April.
And while their latest single, “Abyss” wasn’t necessarily a release to celebrate the band’s milestone, it nonetheless celebrates the band’s sound.
The emotionally charged ambiance of “Abyss” is a dark melancholy mood that dances in the ethereal darkness of the void.
But within that darkness, there is a light.
The light is embedded in Ben’s sincere delivery of the poignant lyrics and he’s wonderfully supported by the band. They too provide light through soft brush strokes on the drums, the riff of the bass, and the tinny distortion of the guitars.
With its subtle nuances “Abyss” shimmers with glimmers of hope in the dark.
