Exiled Hope and Steel Forge’s newest single, “Beyond The Veil,” is a mesmerising blend of melodic metal infused with elements of doom and folk. Distinguishing itself from the heavier, melo-death tone that defines the rest of the upcoming EP Realm Of The Exiled, out on January 10, 2025.
Spearheaded by multi-instrumentalist Sofia Frasz, the track showcases her talent in creating an immersive and emotionally rich experience that pushes the boundaries of traditional metal storytelling.
On the song, she says,
“’Beyond The Veil’ is the only song on the EP that I did pretty much entirely solo. I was hesitant to include it on the EP at first since the doom and folk influences stand in such stark contrast to the melodeath influences that dominate the EP. Thematically, though, it’s a perfect fit: the song deals with Hope’s mixed feelings about returning to the mortal world. She knows that some regard her as a hero, but she let many others down during her failed attempts to liberate her city, and still many more consider her an enemy.”
Evoking a sound that balances strength and delicacy, the intricate arrangement is a haunting atmosphere that is created through orchestral synths and carefully placed guitar lines that set the stage for a grand narrative.
Sofia adds this about Hope’s journey,
“She knows she still has the potential to save her city from the tyrants who rule it, but her past mistakes and the betrayal she experienced weigh heavily on her mind. She wonders whether it’s worth fighting her way through the legions of monsters who want to keep her imprisoned in the underworld if she’ll only end up failing again. Eventually, Hope resolves to continue her journey even though she has no idea what awaits her back in the mortal world.”
Sofia’s vocal delivery is both commanding and vulnerable, drawing one into the character’s turmoil. The emotional depth is paired with sophisticated musical shifts, keeping the track dynamic and unpredictable but showcasing her ability to maintain dramatic tension while weaving a seamless narrative.
