Doves continue to redefine their legacy with their latest single, “Cold Dreaming,” a psychedelic soul-infused track that signals a bold chapter for the iconic band. Ahead of their sixth studio album, Constellations For The Lonely, the song showcases a masterful blend of soaring synths, deep beats, and cinematic orchestration that feels both ambitious and emotional.

From the opening moments, “Cold Dreaming” captures the attention with its swirling and layered sound. It’s a tribute to the golden era of late-’60s and early-’70s psych-soul with Doves creating a lush sonic environment that envelops one with synth riffs that are persistent yet dynamic. They build to a cathartic release, while the strings add a grandeur that elevates the track to new heights.

What sets “Cold Dreaming” apart is its duality: while it revels in intricate and expansive production, it remains grounded by its heartfelt message. Andy Williams explains,

“‘Cold Dreaming’ is a song about forgiveness. Trying to forgive and move on.”

This thematic exploration of resilience gives the song a powerful emotional core, echoing the band’s own journey through creative and personal evolution.

Another notable shift is the vocal interplay between Andy and Jez Williams, who have stepped into lead roles both on stage and in the studio during a time of transition for the band. Their harmonies are  layered over the track’s sweeping instrumentation and bring a fresh perspective to the Doves sound while maintaining the essence that fans have cherished for decades.

The single arrives at a pivotal moment for the band, who are riding high on the wave of anticipation for their upcoming tour. With 12 of 16 UK dates sold out, including two nights at Manchester’s Aviva Studios, the band’s return to live performance has been met with rapturous enthusiasm.

“Cold Dreaming” not only sets the stage for Constellations For The Lonely but also reaffirms Doves as masters of reinvention. By drawing from the past while pushing their sound forward, the band offers a track that feels timeless yet utterly fresh.
